I'm not a native English speaker. How good does my English need to be? |
 |
|
For the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL, non-native English speakers should have a level of 7.0 in the IELTS* test (academic modules), or the Cambridge Advanced Certificate. Contact the British Council in your country for details of your nearest IELTS testing centre. If you have an English-language qualification which you know to be equivalent to either of the above qualifications, just contact us for advice. In some ways, as a non-native speaker of English, you have an advantage: you are probably more familiar with grammatical rules and terminology than most native speakers. Approximately a third of those who train with International Training Network are non-native speakers of English. |
|
For other International Training Network face to face and online courses, non-native speakers should have a linguistic competence of at least the level of the Cambridge First Certificate or IELTS* level 5.0.

I have no formal qualifications beyond GCSE's. Is it still possible to take a course?
Trinity College normally requires trainees to have at least qualifications for entry to higher education (tertiary level) in the U.K. or in the trainees' home country. However, exceptions can be made in some circumstances, for example if you have certain types of work experience or other vocational training. If you are unsure about whether your qualifications are suitable, please contact us so that we can advise you specifically. For other ITN face to face courses, qualifications for entry to higher education are not required. |
 |
Am I too old to do an intensive Trinity College course?
A number of more mature trainees (over 60) have successfully completed the course. If you are not sure whether you would cope with its demands, why not come on a one-week course? This will enable you to experience the main teaching sessions and teaching practice first-hand, and to see how you get on. At the end of the course we will be able to advise you specifically concerning your ability to take the course. |
|
Am I too young to do a course with International Training Network?
The minimum age limit for acceptance onto the 5-week Trinity College course is 18 years. For all our other face-to-face and online courses the minimum age limit is 16 years.
Can you give some examples of the contexts in which International Training Network graduates use their training?
International Training Network graduates are using their training in a great variety of contexts. Many are teaching in private language schools, colleges, universities and Bible schools at home and abroad. Several have opened their own language schools. Others are involved in teaching more informally through English Club activities, either with adults or children. Some take part in short-term projects such as English language summer camps. A number of graduates are involved in one-to-one teaching in the U.K. or abroad, perhaps in a business context or informally at home. Some have gone on to curriculum writing or teacher training. |
|
Does International Training Network help graduates find jobs?
Although we are not a placement agency, a large number of organisations do regularly contact us with employment opportunities for newly-qualified English Language teachers. This information is made available to our trainees. |

Is the Trinity (TESOL) certificate the same as a TEFL certificate?
Yes. In this context TESOL and TEFL can be used interchangeably. The Trinity College CertTESOL course is very similar to the Cambridge CELTA course and is an internationally recognised TEFL qualification (both the CELTA and the CertTESOL are accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as a level 4 qualification). The course may also be referred to as an 'ELT' (English Language Teaching) qualification. |
